If you’re reading this to help you quit smoking – well done!
Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of early death in the UK and worldwide. Half of all lifelong smokers will die prematurely, usually about 10 years younger than non-smokers. The main causes of death from smoking are heart disease and strokes, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Stopping smoking is always beneficial to heath and it is never too late to quit. Every cigarette smoked damages the lungs in a way that may not show until later in life. After the age of 35-40 years, for every year of continued smoking, a person loses about 3 months of life expectancy.
Our stop smoking service ‘Stub it!’ supports patients in the city that want to quit. Stub It! provides a 12-week programme of stop smoking support. The first appointment is with a specially trained pharmacist to help develop a plan individual to you, based on your needs and patterns of smoking.
Since the service started in 2018, we have seen nearly 2000 patients and helped nearly 40% of them quit smoking. The evidence suggests that smokers are three times as likely to quit successfully by using a combination of products and behavioural support like Stub It!
So, if you are thinking of stopping smoking, don’t put it off and do something now! Call your GP practice and they will book you an appointment with one of our advisors. If you would like to read more about quitting smoking, please go to https://www.nhs.uk/smokefree.
