‘Good’ start to 2019 for Southglade Medical Practice

Alliance-run Southglade Medical Practice had an exciting start to the year when it was awarded a “Good” rating following inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care providers in England and conducts periodic inspections of general practices across the country. Southglade Medical Practice is pleased to have been awarded an overall rating of “Good” following an inspection in November 2018. This was the first inspection to take place since the Nottingham City General Practice Alliance was awarded the contract at Southglade in April 2018.

The CQC assess a practice in five key areas: how well-led it is, how safe it is, how caring it is, how responsive it is, and how effective its care is.

At the previous inspection in February 2018, whilst under the management of a different provider, the practice received an overall “inadequate” rating despite scoring highly in some of the assessment areas.

Nottingham City General Practice Alliance was awarded a one-year contract by Nottingham City CCG to run Southglade Medical Practice in April 2018, and immediately began an improvement programme focussing on improving the areas that were previously unsatisfactory, whilst still ensuring safe, accessible care to patients.

The team at Southglade comprises of GPs, Nurses, Clinical Pharmacists, Health Care Assistants, Receptionists and Administration Clerks, many of whom are familiar faces to patients having worked at the practice under the previous provider. Two new appointments were made by the Alliance to oversee the practice improvement programme – Dr Ije Nnadi as Clinical Lead and Diane Addy as Service Manager.

Among other comments in the report, the Inspector noted that:

“Staff treated patients with kindness, respect and compassion.”

“The practice had a comprehensive programme of quality improvement activity and routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care provided.”

“The practice understood the needs of its population and tailored services in response to those needs.”

Diane Addy, NCGPA Service Manager at the practice, commented:

“I am very proud that the hard work of the team over the past 8 months has paid off and that CQC have recognised the team for our caring, friendly service and the work we have done to add additional appointments in for the benefit of our patients”
